Let me begin by saying that I am no Potter Head. There is no deep, underlying, fan girling reason as to why this quote really stuck out to me besides the fact it’s about a billion percent true. We get so caught up in our situation that even the simplest of things can flee our minds. We begin to think that because we were given a challenging mountain that we are going to have to rough it through. We eventually get so used to working so hard to muddle through the darkness that when something as simple as flipping the light on comes about, we think it’s too good to be true. And we end up suffering far longer than we should of. Which is unfortunate. Lengthening the dark tunnel when we could’ve already been in the light by now. Sucks is probably a better word for it than unfortunate. Because that just sucks.
A flashlight. A lantern. A sparkler. A campfire. A light bulb. A lamp. A cell phone light. A lighter. A string of Christmas Lights. A lightening bug. A room light. A street lamp. A flame from pretty much anything we can light on fire. And the list goes on. And on & on & on. So what is the reason that we didn’t flip the light on? Were there literally no options available for even the dullest & smallest little glimmer of light? Because that isn’t out of the realm of possibilities. Because batteries die, twigs get wet, light bulbs burn out. Or were you just too busy sinking deeper & deeper in your black hole that you forgot to even look? Or, another option, were you only looking for the obvious sources of light that you didn’t even consider the unconventional ones? There’s no wrong answer here. But I will say that you need to use what you have, when you have it. Because the saying “nothing lasts forever” is usually true. That window isn’t going to stay open for as long as it needs to be until you finally figure out why God opened it in the first place. I mean God’s a patient man but He can’t help if you don’t look outside the box every once in awhile. That little glimmer of light was right there, RIGHT THERE. And instead of you choosing to strike that match, you chose to see a stick & soak it with your sorrows. So now not only did you get miss out on that little spark that could’ve brought light & happiness back to your world, you also missed out on proving to yourself that you are so much stronger & more innovative than you give yourself credit for. God wouldn’t have given you the opportunity to use this specific light source that was hidden amongst the brush if He didn’t truly believe you weren’t persistent enough to find it or smart enough to use it when you needed it most. Think about that for a second. Because it’s true.
Big mountains are difficult on the mind, body & soul. We get so wrapped up in the hard stuff that the simple stuff somehow becomes hard too. And once we realize that that is happening we just need to take a step back & re-evaluate. To look at the big picture. Because that might be the moment we notice the light switch in the corner or the lantern sitting on the mantle. And then, when we return back to the hike up our humongous mountain that God laid before us, the darkness seems a little less scary or the path seems a little less difficult. Because we can see. See where we have already traveled & what lies ahead. So today, the beginning of a new week, I challenge you to take a step back from your current mountain & see the big picture. To not let the easy stuff become hard stuff. To flip the light on & see. You can do it my friends. And after you do, you will feel like a great adventurer.
