The One Legged Mom

Being a Mom doesn't stop just because I lost a leg…

Battle Against Time.

How does time seem to fly by so incredibly fast? Like this fact should probably be added to the only other two for sure’s in life, death & taxes. And I know we have all heard the saying that time goes by faster the older we get, but I’m pretty sure time has gone fast for my entire life. Like in half of a blink’s time an entire chapter has flown by. My friend & I were talking about this the other day. Her son will going to high school this year and she said he told her that he couldn’t wait for the next 4 years to be done because he is ready for adulthood. And all I could think to tell my friend (besides the fact that her son is absolutely nuts 🥜 ) is that his wish is going to come true faster than he will ever know. Even at the ages of 15 or 16, time flies by. In my opinion, that age went as fast as the last week or last 5 years has gone. It just feels like 15 went on 16, went on 18, went on 27 in a matter of minutes. And there is literally nothing we can do about how life seems to jump further & further ahead with every blink we make. However, there is one way to combat it. To make this minute last more than just a minute. Want to know how? Prepare yourself. This is so mind blowingly simple.

Do things with quickly passing time that you’re going to remember. Because memories can last an entire lifetime. Don’t just go through the motions today just to get to tomorrow. I don’t care how big of plans you have. Tomorrow might have big things scheduled for it, but today has limitless potential. Potential to be better than any planned day trips or scheduled spa days. Potential to be a favorite memory of yours 5, 10 or 100 years from now. Yes. You will remember the Great Wolf Lodge & zoo trips. And that’s awesome. But there is no rule that you can make memories only when you do something super special or something that took a week or more to plan. I know that there are lots of things that do need planned, but looking too far into the future can make you miss out on what’s in front of you. And that’s the exact moment that time starts to slip away from you & you begin to lose so much valuable time. Time that could’ve been used to make memories. Being around home or in a beautiful place isn’t going to change the speed of time. One doesn’t make time go faster or instantly become more memorable than the other just because it took more planning & coordinating. And the best way to see & understand that concept is to keep looking for opportunities to make memories & seizing them when they do come. Carpe the Diem if you must. Pull your nose out of your phone & see how much fun your kids are having dancing in the rain. Notice how your daughter lights up when you ask her to help bake cookies. Now that’s the stuff you’ll remember.

Like I said, time is never going to slow down. Maybe if you have Father Time’s phone number & he owes you a favor, it might, but other than that, it’s not going to happen. And that’s why it’s so important not to wish time away. I don’t care if it’s only an hour or a single day you’re making that wish on. A lot can happen in a days time or even an hours time. I mean from the time I started feeling lousy to my first amputation was less than a day. Sure it wasn’t ideal. but it’s definitely a day I’ll remember. So as for today, I need you to take it minute by minute. Remember all the little details because that’s what is going to help you most in the battle against time. Realize that small moments can make big memories. And most importantly, realize how good life is. Don’t squander it by wishing it would be tomorrow already. Because all of a sudden, when tomorrow does come, you are going to be wishing you had yesterday back.
