The One Legged Mom

Being a Mom doesn't stop just because I lost a leg…

The Winter That Doesn’t Last Forever.

Winter doesn’t last forever. Even on the coldest days of winter days, we need to remember that. Even when the snow comes up past our knees and it seems impossible to take another step, we need to remember that. I know the cold can seem unbearable sometimes, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to endure. We just need to learn how to bundle up in just the right way to keep us warm for however long this winter will last. Yes, being cold sucks and sometimes it causes us to hurt all the way down to our bones. But without the 10 degree days, we wouldn’t appreciate the 30 degree days. Without the 30 degree days, we wouldn’t appreciate the 50 degree days. And while winter may not last forever, we still must learn to appreciate it or risk being miserable for months on end. And that is a risk I never have or never will be willing to take.

I’ll be the first to admit that winter is definitely not my favorite season. Just as the hard times in our lives are not the moments we can’t wait to endure. But any which way, no one makes it through life without braving a few rough winters first. So instead of locking yourself away for the storms, learn from them. Find something good in them. Then your winter won’t feel like forever. Do you feel like you’re getting hammered with several inches of snow? Look forward to sledding when the storm finally lets up a little. Temperatures that are in the teens? Try something new and learn to ice skate on that frozen pond even if its made of the tears you cried when your winter first came. It’s ok if you fall a couple times or need to hold someone’s hand to get across. There is reason God put those people in your life to go through winters with you. They aren’t just there to watch you be miserable or to only keep themselves warm. They are eventually going to miss the sun that is your smile and happiness. And who said that the sun couldn’t shine on even the coldest of winter days?

Do you know what is the best part of the struggles in life? That they don’t last forever if you don’t let them. Sure if you chose to move to Antarctica you may not ever get out of your winter. But don’t make that choice to move there. Choose to live somewhere where spring will come. A place where you are close to friends and family that can help you if you need it. I know winter can sneak up on us, but as long as you are as prepared as you possibly can be, I promise you spring will come much quicker. Even if that means you’re only equipped with a positive attitude and a will to survive. Because just as winter doesn’t last forever, Spring never fails to be beautiful.
